Artist Statement

Frédérique Ulman-Gagné’s work in abstract painting and drawing is tied to her everyday life and uses autobiographical references. In her work, she meditates on the idea of identity and places : mother, child, artist, woman, lover, the house, the studio, spaces to live and to create. All of these elements become patterns, which are repeated throughout her paintings. The work is fragmented and uses repetition, always paying great attention to the process of creation. Having worked in collaboration with her son for many years, she insists on the importance of this period in her practice which became the topic of her Masters thesis in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. Her present work is a continuation of this collaboration, appearing as the second chapter of her story.
